Mrs. Hoggard's First Grade Eagles

Welcome to First Grade with Mrs. Hoggard! This is my ninth year teaching, fifth year in first grade, and first year at Petersburg Primary.I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2011 and have taught first grade, second grade, third grade and fifth grade. I am originally from Virginia Beach, VA and moved to North Carolina to go to school. My husband and I moved to South Carolina just a few weeks ago with our two dogs, Pip and Nina, and we all love it! I am so excited for all of the wonderful opportunities this year holds for us and the amazing things we will accomplish. I encourage you to connect with us on class dojo if you can, please let me know if you need another invite printed or sent and I will make sure to get that to you.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at any time for any thing as I can honestly tell you I cannot do this without you.

What can I do to help at home?

Reading - The biggest thing we talk about in school is how we get better at things is to practice, so reading with your child everyday is the number one way to help. In addition to this talking about and writing about what you read are key to deepening our understanding of text. You can use the leveled questions in students homework folder to help you. Be sure to read both fiction and nonfiction with your child as well.

Math - Having a strong number sense will make so much of a difference in math daily. Have your child practice writing and saying their numbers to 120. You can also have them do this counting down (this one can be a little harder), counting by 5's, 10's, or from any number you give them (start at 63 and count up, start at 65 and count up by 5's, start at 100 and count down, etc.). Also practice skills such as telling time to the hour and half hour, identifying coins and counting change, identifying 2-D and 3-D shapes, making a graph of a survey question ( what's your favorite food), or even measuring items around the house.
