Four-Year-Old Classes Participate in Little Folks Food Festival

As part of its annual celebration of the Week of the Young Child, Chesterfield County First Steps (CCFS) hosted the Little Folks Food Festival April 17 at Northeastern Technical College in Cheraw. The event featured healthy and wholesome food for young children. A highlight of the trip was a magic show provided by Fish the Magish! Our CDEP students and their teachers had a great time at the Food Festival. Thank you, First Steps and NETC!

"Real Men Read" Clubs

First and Second grade boys are enjoying a special time twice a month in which they gather together in the gym for a read-aloud and some independent reading time. We appreciate Coach Pollard for helping to spearhead this initiative!

Teachers Present at Conference

Ulanda James, Literacy Coach, and teachers Anna Hancock and Ashley Hancock presented a session at the South Carolina International Reading Association conference Feb. 23 in Hilton Head. Their session was entitled, 'Snapshots of Literacy: Early Childhood Practices Granting Students Access to the “Literacy Club.” These ladies did an outstanding job representing their school and themselves. Participants left with many practical ways to create a true literacy environment in their Pre-K and K classrooms!

African American Read-In

Petersburg Primary, under the leadership of Ulanda James, PPS Literacy Coach, hosted its first African American Read-In Wednesday, February 28. This event was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. Petersburg invited guests to come in and read in each classroom. Books selected featured African American authors and/or characters. The event was a great success, and plans are to make it an annual event.

Parents and students enjoyed a special night Friday, February 16, at the Sweetheart Dance. Proceeds will be donated to Relay for Life.

Kindness Week

Staff and students enjoyed celebrating The Great Kindness Challenge February 12-16 with a spirit week focusing on Kindness. Themes included:
Monday-Hunting for Kindness (Wear Camouflage)
Tuesday-It's Not Tacky to be Kind (Dress "Tacky")
Wednesday-We Love being Kind (Wear Red or Pink)
Thursday-We're Crazy about Kindness (Crazy Hair and/or Crazy Socks)
Friday-Growing Up Kind (What We Want To Be When We Grow Up).
Students and staff were also recognized for acts of kindness. We wanted everyone to know that kindness matters at PPS!

Child Development (4K) and Kindergarten Registration for 2018-2019

Child Development and Kindergarten Registration for 2018-2019 will be held at Petersburg Primary School Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Free screenings of your child's vision, weight and height will be provided. Please bring 1) your child, 2) his/her certified birth certificate, 3) his/her certificate of immunization, 4) his/her Social Security Card, and your proof of residency in Pageland. Those registering a child for our four-year-old program (Child Development/CDEP) must also bring a proof of income (W-2, tax return, or paystub), as this program is income-based, or your child's Medicaid card. In order to register for Child Development, your child must be 4 on or before Sept. 1. To register for kindergarten, he/she must be 5 on or before Sept. 1.

Santa Visits Petersburg!

Santa and his special helpers visited Petersburg December 6 so that children could have their picture made with him. Proceeds benefitted the school's Relay for Life campaign. The school thanks volunteers from Lynches River Electric Cooperative for helping make this happen for the children this year!
